Zaber's X-LRM Series products are motorised linear stages with integrated controllers. The X-LRM's hardened steel construction and recirculating ball bearing guide provide exceptional rigidity and thermal stability. High stiffness makes the X-LRM ideal for multi-axis configurations or applications where excellent stability under cantilever loads is required.

The stages connect to the USB 2.0 or RS-232 port of any computer and can be daisy-chained with up to 254 Zaber devices per chain. The daisy-chain also shares power, making it possible for multiple X-Series products to share a single power supply.

Andor Launches Marana – Large Field of View, Deep Cooled Back-illuminated sCMOS for Astronomy and Physical Sciences

Andor Technology (Andor), an Oxford Instruments company and world leader in scientific imaging and spectroscopy solutions, last month announced the launch of the new ultrasensitive ‘Marana 4.2B-11’ back-illuminated camera platform for physical sciences.

Featuring 95% Quantum Efficiency and market-leading vacuum cooling down to -45 0C, Marana represents the ultimate in sCMOS sensitivity and high dynamic range photometry. Marana 4.2B-11 is also the largest field-of-view sCMOS commercially available, whilst delivering up to 48 fps, perfectly suited to ‘dynamic astronomy’ applications such as Space Debris tracking, Near Earth Object detection and Solar Astronomy.

Marana 4.2B-11 combines a 4.2 Megapixel array format with 11 mm pixels, enabling an impressive 32mm sensor diagonal. NDIR Spectroscopy LD2120 Differential Pyroelectric Detectors

Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy is by far the most common gas detection method used today. Infra-red radiation generated by a broad band emitter is passed through the gas which is contained in a measurement cell. The advantage of NDIR comes from the strength of absorption in the mid IR compared to methods based on near infra-red spectroscopy.

The strong absorption allows relatively low concentrations of gas to be detected with small path lengths and inexpensive components. In order to measure gases at particularly small concentrations or very quickly, a high sensitivity detector is required. Differential Pyro devices with responsivities of 240,000V/W are ideal for this fit and forget application. LASER COMPONENTS manufactures a range of innovative diff erential pyroelectric detectors at our factory in Florida. The LD2120 has an in built differential amplifier within the housing generating a signal with a 1.41 improvement in signal to noise over a standard pyroelectric detector.

From our offi ce in the UK we can also supply broad band emitters for this application. The EP range is a pulsable device using a tungsten filament to achieve an operating temperature of 1900K. The emitters are housed in a TO8 package and are fitted with a gold plated parabolic reflector as standard.

Compact crossed-cavity C-T spectrometer

OtO Photonics’ “HummingBird”, crossed-cavity spectrometer offers the performance of their well-established “SmartEngine” in a significantly reduced package just 83x75.5x26.75mm³ (<168cm³) yet the optical bench provides excellent rigidity, ensuring industry-leading stability.

At launch HummingBird is available with a choice of two 2048-pixel sensors, six slit sizes (10-300µm), twelve gratings & three input port configuration – enabling users to define spectral range, resolution, sensitivity, Dynamic Range, SNR and speed.

HummingBird is compatible with OtO’s SpectraSmart software and supported by Windows and Linux SDKs.

PZ fibres

Polarising fibres (PZ) only allow one polarisation of light to propagate along the fibre; the other polarisation will experience high losses. This is different to a polarisation maintaining fibre (PM) which will support propagation of both polarisations. PZ fibres have a specific waveguide design with high birefringence and leakage behaviour so that the cut-off wavelength for the two polarisations is different. Coiling the fibre introduces higher losses for one of the polarisations so PZ fibres can be used to create a high extinction ratio ‘all-fibre’ polariser.

We can offer IXFiber polarising fibre and polarising modules that can be suited to your application. The modules have the correct design of fibre and coil diameter to produce polarisers with a high extinction ratio (≥30dB), large bandwidth (typically larger than 100nm), and low loss. The modules are available for a range of wavelengths, with a variety of connector options. They are particularly useful in polarisation-sensitive applications such as quantum optics and laser cooling atom trapping.

2014 Laser Support Services opened the doors to its unique walk-in facility located in the heart of the Science and Innovation Campus at Harwell, Oxfordshire. The “shop” has increased customer and supplier engagement by enabling suppliers to showcase products and allowing customers to see products in demonstration before purchasing.

The welcoming meeting space has seen many events take place including supplier product demonstrations, one-to-one meetings with our experienced engineer, and offers customers the opportunity to advance their projects and experiments.

The Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult’s
purpose is to deliver long-term benefits to the UK economy and accelerate UK economic growth in industries where applying compound semiconductors creates a competitive advantage and enables new products or end markets.

MPPCs for LIDAR applications and more ...

Hamamatsu Photonics introduce their new range of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) including Peak-shifted MPPCs and Modules, Hole Wire Bonding (HWB) MPPCs, VUV-MPPC 4th Generation and the new High Voltage Power Supply which is optimized specifically for Hamamatsu’s comprehensive line-up.

These MPPCs feature a new structure which significantly enhances sensitivity in the NIR region making them ideal for applications such as industrial LIDAR applications, distance measurement, radiation monitoring and medical imaging.

Optical materials range is expanded

Hellma Materials GmbH is now able to offer an expanded
range of advanced optical materials produced by its wholly owned US-based subsidiary CVD Ceramics, Inc.

Their CVD Zinc Sulfide® and Cleartran® are low cost, durable, chemically inert, non-hygroscopic materials for infrared windows, domes and optical elements.

While Hellma Materials also claim that their CVD Zinc Selenide® is the material of choice for use in optical components for high powered CO2 Lasers, due to its low
bulk absorption at 10.6 microns. Its excellent optical performance enables applications in high resolution FLIR thermal imaging, thermometry and spectroscopy.

New Imaging Technologies - seeing beyond the visible

New Imaging Technologies (NIT) offers CMOS and InGaAs imaging sensors and cameras operating over an extraordinary dynamic range of more than 140dB. The sensors are particularly useful for machine vision, automobile and autonomous driving, biometrics, security and surveillance. NIT delivers from large volume production down to small numbers and custom products. Their facility is fully ISO9001 accredited.

Their SWIR or Short-Wave Infrared imaging covers the wavelength range from 900nm to 1700nm. A large number of applications that are difficult or impossible to perform using visible light are made possible, with great results, using short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging thus enabling the user to "See Beyond the Visible".

SWIR is similar to visible light in that photons are reflected or absorbed by an object, providing the strong contrast needed for higher resolution imaging – unlike thermal images, that rely on radiated photons. At NIT, they offer unique SWIR cameras and sensors.

Optical Coherence Tomography

Ibsen introduces a spectrometer platform specifically targeted
at Optical Coherence Tomography.

The 840nm highly efficient new EAGLE OCT-S spectrometer with best-in-class optical throughput and compact size for Spectral Domain OCT is suited for OEM integration into medical and industrial grade instruments for applications like Raman and SD-OCT. The wavelength range of the standard version is 810–900 nm, but can be customized to other ranges.

EAGLE OCT-S is supplied with Teledyne E2V OctoPlus camera with 2048 tall pixels.

Snapscan hyperspectral Imaging

The imec snapscan system is a major breakthrough for
hyperspectral imaging application research. The snapscan
acquires high quality hypercube data-sets with unmatched signal-to-noise ratio and spatial and spectral resolution, in down to a few hundreds of milliseconds.

The user friendly snapscan demo kit enables application research of the highest quality. It provides all key components required: the hyperspectral image sensor, camera, optics, piezo scanning, active cooling system, lighting, tripod mounts and imec’s most advanced hyperspectral imaging software.

Custom ball lens profiles

Laser Components can now provide custom ball lens profiles on the end faces of silica fibres. Fibres with spherical lenses are often used in medical technology applications to optimise radiation characteristics in endoscopes for example.

The rounded surface of the ball lens reduces the risk of injury during the operation whilst at the same time controlling the beam characteristics of the laser. The same type of fibre tips are also used in other applications for coupling light sources with the fibre.

A full range of bespoke imaging filters

Brinell Vision will be exhibiting a full range of bespoke imaging filters from the visible to mid-IR range at booth B11. This will include the company’s latest CMOS IR-cut filter CN-IR03, which enables precise colour replication, effective IR blocking and exceptional visible light transmission to provide enhanced image contrast. The filters have been produced to meet the latest ultra-low defect specifications demanded by the optoelectronic industry.

Brinell Vision was launched eight years ago at Photonex 2010, and has since developed a range of optical filters for applications in diverse areas such as laser protection for pilots and IR-imaging for satellites.
