Masterclass on Lasers

When planning to use laser technology for your research or in your work it is important to understand the different types that are available, what applications they can be used for and how to make sure they are going to work for you.

In this 45 minute open, informal workshop we will be discussing various laser types and systems.

The point of a ‘Masterclass’ is to endeavour to cover all research areas but in the time available this is impractical and so we major in those areas in which we are currently finding there to be most interest. We will introduce four topics for different research areas and explain how different lasers enable these applications.

The topics are:

  • Micromachining (femtosecond, picosecond lasers)
  • Shock Peening (nanosecond lasers)
  • Laser Fluorescence (CW lasers)
  • Quantum Gravimeters (Ultra-narrow linewidth CW fibre lasers)

Craig comments: My aim is to make my presentation of interest to everyone no matter their experience or specific interest. I am fully understanding that you are a physicist, a material scientist, a biologist, whatever you are by education you are unlikely to be an electronics engineer!

When I am selling lasers, because this is what I do every day of my life, I tend to lead with the assumption that you need a turnkey solution, one that works specifically for your application and not one that you will need to develop, customise or otherwise amend yourself.

I want you to leave this Masterclass knowing what questions to ask when you are considering a laser for your next project or job whether this is to be purchased from Photonics Solutions or not. I am hoping that attendees will challenge me with questions!

Speaker biography

Craig joined Photonic Solutions in April 2005 as an engineer, and has installed over 200 lasers ranging from Extremely High Energy nanosecond systems, Dye lasers, OPO and OPAs, Supercontinuum Fibre laser systems and Optical Frequency Combs. In 2011 he joined the sales team and in July 2017 became Sales Director. Craig received a BSc (Hons) in 2001 in laser physics & optoelectronics and a PhD in physics in 2005 from Strathclyde University. His academic research included building a storage ring for Bose-Einstein Condensates which is still used today to study atomic interferometry. His publications includes the following:
